dc.description.abstract5-Substituted-2-benzylthiouracil 1(a-c) and 5,6-disubstituted-2- benzylthiouracil 1d on chlorination with POCI 3 gave 5-substituted-4-chloro-2-benzylthiopyrimidines 2(a-c) and 5,6-disubstituted-4- chloro-2-benzylthiopyrimidine 2d respectively. Reaction of 2(a- d) with 2-mercaptobenzimidazole in methanol in presence of anhyd potassium carbonate yielded 2-[(5-substituted-2-benzylthiopyrimidin-4-yl) thio]-1H-benzimidazoles 3. Further, reaction of 2(a-d) with 2-aminobenzimidazole in methanol in presence of pyridine gave 2-[(5-substituted-2-benzylthiopyrimidin-4-yl) amino]-1 H-benzimidazoles 4 in 42-72% yield. The structures of all the synthesized compounds were confirmed by spectroscopic techniques. The synthesized compounds were screened for antibacterial and antifungal activities.en_US
