Water is the important constituent of life support system. It is essential for the existence of human beings, animals and plants. Potable water is one which is free from pathogenic micro- organisms and chemicals that are deleterious to human health. Quality of water often met in nature is not suitable for drinking due to the presence of impurities in dissolved and suspended form. Ground water can contaminate with impurities through minerals dissolved from natural rocks, surface run-off, leaking from septic or sewage systems and direct natural bodies of water. As there are a number of variables, only statistical methods are useful for prediction of concentration of pollutants. The study estimated the various parameters of ground water which were suitable for drinking purpose at selected points in Tiptur town and its surrounding areas by correlation and regression technique. The analysis revealed the degree of relationship between the ground water parameters which were under study. It was also found that there was a perfect positive relationship between total dissolved solids and electrical conductivity. There was high degree correlation between electrical conductivity versus chloride and total dissolved solids versus chloride. Also, there was low degree correlation between electrical conductivity versus calcium, total dissolved solids versus calcium and chloride versus calcium as represented in scatter diagrams. Regression analysis estimated the method of calculation of concentration one parameter which depends on the other parameter (Table 1). The method adopted in the study saves time and cost for the analysis in removal pollution load for the water supply departments and municipals. Hence research made in the study area suggests the scope of statistical methods in the finding of ground water which is free from pollutants and contaminations for its potability and to lead healthy life. © 2012 - Kalpana Corporation.en_US
