A new series of metal complexes of Cu(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Zn(II), Cd(II), and Hg(II) have been synthesized from the Schiff base derived from benzofuran-2-carbohydrazide and 4- methyl-thiobenzaldehyde. All the complexes have been characterized on the basis of elemental analysis, magnetic moments and spectral studies. The elemental analysis shows MLCl2 stoichiometry where M= Metal (II) ions, L=BCMeTB (Schiff base) and X=Cl for all the complexes. On the basis of spectral studies, complexes of Cu(II), Co(II) and Ni(II) have been assigned polymeric octahedral structures, where as the complexes of Zn(II), Cd(II) and Hg(II) have been assigned monomeric tetrahedral. The antifungal and antibacterial activities of the ligand and its metal complexes have been screened against selected fungi and bacteria.en_US
