Oxovanadium (IV) complexes with o-(5-substituted salicylideneimino) benzoylhydrazide have been prepared by reacting vanadyl chloride with these ligands in alcoholic medium. The complexes have been characterised by elemental analysis. They have 1 : 1 stoichiometry of the type VO.L. The IR spectra of the complexes compared with ligands emphasise that these ligands show bivalent tridentate behaviour in these oxovanadium (IV) complexes reacting in enol form. The magnetic moments obtained at room temperature are in the range of 1.0-1.3 BM which is less than requires for one unpaired electron. The electronic spectra are characterised by three band maxima and interpreted using BG model. The various ligand field and NSH parameters have been calculated. The analytical, spectral and magnetic data indicate that in these complexes oxovanadium (IV) exhibits coordination number five and has square pyramidal configuration.en_US
