Complexes of Co(II), Ni(II), and Cu(II) containing macrocyclic tetradentate nitrogen donor (N4) ligand have been synthesized from the template condensation reaction between substituted benzil and ethylenediamine(EDA) The newly synthesized ligands [N4L1] and [N4L2] and its complexes have been characterized by elemental analyses, molar conductance measurement, magnetic susceptibility measurements, FTIR, electronic and EPR spectral. The spectral data suggested hexa co-ordinated state for these complexes. Conductivity data suggested that they behave as non-electrolytes. Based on spectral studies, an octahedral geometry has been proposed for Co(II), Ni(II) complexes but a distorted octahedral geometry for Cu(II) complexes respectively. The ligand and their complexes have been screened in vitro against pathogenic fungi and bacteria to assess their growth inhibiting potential.en_US
