Title: Synthesis of new indolyl benzodiazepines and thier DNA cleavage and antimicrobial activities

Abstract: 2,5-Disubstituted indole aldehydes (1b) were reacted with substituted acetophenones (2a-e) in presence of base to yield the respective chalcones (3a-e). Chalcones were then reacted with substituted orthophenylenediamines to obtain title compounds (4a-e). The newly synthesized compounds were characterized by their spectral and analytical data. The compounds were screened for their antibacterial activity against S. aureus and B. subtilis and antifungal activity against A. niger and A. flavus. Further, synthesized compounds were also screened for their DNA cleavage activity.
