The novel Schiff base ligand 2-((2-hydroxynaphthalen-1-yl)methylene)-N-(4-phenylthiazol-2-yl)hydrazinecarboxamide (L) obtained by the condensation of N-(4-phenylthiazol-2-yl)hydrazinecarboxamide with 2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde and its newly synthesized Cu(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Zn(II) and Cd(II) complexes have been characterized by microanalysis, molar conductance, IR, 1H NMR, ESI-mass, UV-Visible, TGA/DTA, ESR and powder X-ray diffraction data to explicate their structures. The IR results confirmed the tridentate binding of the ligand involving oxygen atom of amide carbonyl, azomethine nitrogen and naphthol oxygen. 1H NMR spectral data of the ligand (L) and its Zn(II) complex agreed well with the proposed structures. Thermogravimetric studies for Cu(II) and Ni(II) complexes indicated the presence of coordinated water molecules and the final product is the metal oxide. In order to appraise the effect of antimicrobial activity of metal ions upon chelation, the newly synthesized ligand and its metal complexes were screened for their antimicrobial activity by minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) method. The DNA cleavage activities were studied using plasmid DNA pBR322 (Bangal re Genei, Bengaluru, Cat. No 105850) as a target molecule by agarose gel electrophoresis method. The brine shrimp bioassay was also carried out to study the in vitro cytotoxicity properties against Artemia salina. Furthermore, the antioxidant activity were determined in vitro by reduction of 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH). The ligand exhibited better in vitro-antioxidant activity than its metal complexes. © 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.en_US
